Why a Strawberry Festival in Crawfordsville?

Johanna LaneIn 1878 Johanna Lane, wife of Henry Lane, decided to hold a Strawberry Festival.  Johanna invited several community organizations to help her with the event planning.

Ladies from the Methodist Church sold tickets at the gate for .10 cents, which allowed you access to the grounds of her home.  While there you would be able watch all the activity on stage, which could have included speeches, performances, skits and various programs.  Johanna would have on each table ice cream, cake and STRAWBERRIES!

This annual celebration of community continues today and occurs the second weekend of June on the grounds of the Lane Place.
